A Comprehensive Training Program for Young Actors

2) develop communication skills that will serve them through every facet of life.

Curtains Up offers acting classes for ages 9-18 in three 8 week sessions--fall, winter, and spring.
In the summer, the studio conducts a theater camp where students take a play from page to stage in a week.

INSTRUCTOR: JOCELYN SLUKA
Ms. Sluka is a professional actress and workshop leader, and the Managing Director of Friends of the Groom Theater Company. In her thirty-one years as a professional actor, singer, director, and acting coach, she has worked with a variety of regional and educational theaters, including the Hollywood Free Theatre, “The Stephen Foster Story,” and in touring productions for US troops stationed in Germany. As a member of AFTRA, she appears in national and regional commercials and industrial films, as well as doing voice-over and print work. In the course of her career travels, she has reached audiences from California to Canterbury to Kampala.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

ACTING UP!
Beginning Acting (Ages 9-12)
The ninety minute classes are held once a week for eight weeks.

Students learn the fundamentals of acting and knowledge of the stage through theater games and ensemble exercises aimed at sharpening basic skills--concentration, movement, voice, characterization, and improvisation--as well as practical help with auditions and scripts. Students present a short performance at the end of the session.

SUMMER INSTRUCTOR: TOM LONG
Tom joins Jocelyn as co-director for Curtains Up Summer Theater Camp.

Mr. Long is the director and founder of Friends of the Groom Theater Company with over 35 years of experience as an actor, teacher, and playwright.

DIGGING DEEPER
Intermediate Acting (Ages 13-18) 
         (Ages 11-12 by permission of instructor)
The ninety minute classes are held once a week for eight weeks.

Through theater games, scene work and group exercises, students learn how to bring honesty and their own unique gifts to the stage to create fully developed characters. The classes include improvisation to stimulate the 
imagination, strengthen acting choices, and enhance stage presence; as well allowing students to rehearse scenes they present at a final showcase.
