UNIT IV. Commitment

 

Bold choices and energy

MAIN OBJECTIVES:
1) Introduce students to the concept of “commitment”
2) Encourage students to perform with confidence and energy

1. WARM-UPS

 

Lead two or three physical and vocal warm-up activities. Include Concentration Point.

2. SKILL BUILDING

Introduce the Concept of Commitment - Commitment is another very important word for actors, and it goes hand in hand with concentration. Basically, it means whatever you say and do on stage, you do with your whole heart—giving yourself fully to your character and your character’s action and performing with energy. This will require you to make strong choices and to be decisive—not hesitant or anxious. Just like with concentration, fear of being judged, lack of preparation, or performing with low energy will all undermine an actor’s ability to commit to a role. 

Family Portrait (Commitment, Character) The teacher calls out the name of a particular type of family. E.g. “I want to see a family of firefighters.” A group of five to eight students then pose for a portrait, adopting a character that fits that family. Encourage students to think about making a good stage picture with their portraits and to commit fully to the character they are playing in each family.

Raise the Stakes (Commitment) A group of three or four students start to improvise a scene based on a scenario provided by the teacher. At three points in the scene, the teacher adds conditions to make the scene more emotionally or physically intense. The students must fully commit to the new conditions, raising their energy levels and emotional reactions to match the new information.

Magic Cloth (Imagination, Commitment) One at a time, students use a piece of white cloth as a prop in an improvised mimed scene. They must, however,  use the cloth creatively–imagining it to be something other than a square of material. E.g. The cloth could be used as a bridal veil or a bullfighter’s cape. Emphasize students should commit fully to whatever activity they are doing with the cloth–performing it with confidence.

3. CLOSING ACTIVITY
