UNIT IV. Commitment

Bold choices and energy

MAIN OBJECTIVES:
1) Review simple principles of mime and practice them.
2) Practice Commitment.

1. WARM-UPS

Lead two or three physical and vocal warm-up activities.

2. SKILL BUILDING

Review the concept of commitment. Basically, commitment means whatever you say and do on stage, you do with your whole heart—giving yourself fully to your character and your character’s action and performing with energy. This will require you to make strong choices and to be decisive—not hesitant or anxious.

Props (Imagination, Commitment) Students pass a random object around a circle. Each student must use the object as something different from what it actually is. E.g. A roll of duct tape could be a bracelet, or a frisbee could be a car’s steering wheel. Emphasize students should commit fully to whatever activity they are doing with the props.

Emotional Friends (Bold choices, Commitment) A group of three or four students start an improvised scene based on a task assigned by the teacher. From time to time, the teacher calls out an emotional state. E.g. “Angry Friends,” or “Frightened Friends.” The students immediately adopt the new emotions as they continue the scene. Encourage students to commit fully and with energy to each new emotional state.

Hitchhiker (Listening, Commitment) Four chairs are arranged on stage to represent a car. From time to time, the driver of the car picks up a hitchhiker who exhibits some strong character quirk or trait. E.g. They have an uncontrollable itch. All the other actors in the car slowly adopt the hitchhiker’s quirk. Eventually, one of the passengers exits, making room for a new hitchhiker with a new trait. Stress that students should make bold choices regarding the character qualities they demonstrate. The other actors should also commit fully and energetically as they adopt those same qualities.
