  • Explain to the students that this is a mime exercise.

  • With the students sitting in an audience formation, ask them to imagine there is a large invisible wall between the stage and the audience where they are sitting. Mime the basic outline of the wall for them.

  • Next, explain that you want the students to come on stage one at a time and paint the wall in some creative way. They should stand upstage from the wall and face the audience when they do this.

  • Demonstrate this for the students. For example, mime finding a paint can, opening it, picking up a brush from the floor, dipping it in the paint, and then painting a few strokes on the invisible wall. Then make sure to deal with the can and the brush you’ve established. For example, mime putting the lid back on the can and carrying the brush and can with you when you exit.

Explain that each new painter must get paint on the wall using a method different from any displayed by previous students. Tell them they need not paint the whole wall; just a few strokes or a small area will be fine. But stress they should try to use good mime practices throughout, e.g., making sure they bring painting supplies with them or show how they obtained them on stage, and dealing with any objects they establish–either putting them away or taking them with them when they are done.
